Defect Analysis for Pharmaceutical Products

Medicinal products and their packaging require quick and detailed defect analysis, as corrective measures must be taken immediately or even entire production processes changed.

Verunreinigungen in Tabletten oder Tablettenverpackungen können unterschiedlichste Ursachen haben, wie die Qualität der eingesetzten Ausgangsstoffe oder Schritte im Produktionsprozess.

Identifying the causes of defects

We can support you by identifying the causes of defects as part of our analyses, thus helping you eliminate them. You can use the knowledge gleaned from these tests to improve your production process.

Our laboratory for surface and solid-state analysis has a wide-ranging portfolio of methods to help you analyze defects in pharmaceutical products:

  • Optical microscopic methods are used to depict the structure of defects and their thermal load, for example.
  • Raman spectroscopy is used to analyze solid and liquid samples right down to their molecular structure.
  • IR spectroscopy is used to calculate the amount of contamination, to determine its structure or to isolate the relevant substance. There is also the option of accessing an extensive database to help identify the molecular structure.
  • Chemical imaging is used to depict the distribution of individual substances to see whether they are concentrated in specific areas or broadly dispersed.
  • Scanning electron microscopy is used to depict the individual components and identify the elements they contain.
  • An x-ray diffractometer is used to analyze crystalline structures, making it possible to clearly identify samples and highlight connections.
  • The atomic force microscope provides detailed information about the hardness and elasticity of a sample. This can be used to analyze the distribution of fillers (such as pigments) or the layer structure of a piece of film packaging.

Effective and economical analyses

Particularly when it comes to analyzing defects in medicinal products, it is much more effective – and also more economical – to take a gradual approach to solving the problem and to plan how to proceed on the basis of the respective analytical results.

Our analytical laboratory is there to help you with state-of-the-art techniques and wide-ranging expertise. Thanks to our in-depth knowledge, we can help you decide which method will lead to the best results. The surface and solid-state analytics team has decades of experience in material and substance knowledge and a broad understanding of manufacturing processes.
